VW Bulli Camper Van LEGO World Record

This is to be celebrated with a spectacular world record. Together with Rene Hoffmeister, one of only 12 certified LEGO model builders worldwide, the f.re.e team has put a VW T2 Bulli in original size made of LEGO bricks on the wheels and will present it during the f.re.e 2019 in hall C5 booth 103.

We made it! Here are the first pictures of the world record.

World record: The iconic camper of many globetrotters, the Bulli T2, made entirely of 400,000 LEGO bricks

From the first stone to the last – the journey of our world record attempt was thrilling, and we are more than happy to present the largest LEGO brick camper van now to the public.

In just six weeks LEGO builder Rene Hoffmeister, one of only twelve certified LEGO model builders worldwide, and his colleague Pascal Lenhard finished the masterpiece. The LEGO T2 comes fully equipped with the iconic Westfalia pop-up roof. The model for the record at-tempt was the VW T2a camping van built between 1967 and 1971.

With the help of 3D programs, the two builders created a construction plan in advance, from which the exact quantity of bricks required was calculated. The stiffness of the side walls and windows was decisive in order to guarantee stability later on.

The first stone was set quickly and the start went without a hitch. However, around three weeks into the project 20,000 transparent bricks for the windows of the Bulli were missing and all constructions were stopped for a short time. In spite of the exact pre-planning the two model builders got into time stress, so that the missing time could only be made up by night shifts and weekend work. For the model builders, this meant "playing" with LEGO bricks from morning to night and on weekends.

The effort was worth it! In the end, the LEGO camper van was on time for the travel- and leisure trade show f.re.e. in Munich. The details of the camper van are mind blowing. Even the refrigerator is filled with things of daily camper life - of course made of LEGO.

Get your own picture: You can marvel at the 5-metre long and 1.90-metre wide LEGO camp-er and the original car at f.re.e 2019.
